Ghee is derived from the milk of different animals such as cows, buffalos, sheep, and camels.

Each type of ghee contains its unique own medicinal value, as per the teachings of Ayurveda. Out of the ghee derived from different animals, Desi cow (gaay) ghee is widely used in India. In fact, ghee is commonly known as the golden elixir in India. It is derived from a special breed of cow in India called the desi cow or Bos Indicus. Milk products from this breed are also known as A2 milk products. The difference between the Indian desi cow and the other cows is the hump at the back. The purest breeds of these desi cows are in India. Many countries have cross breeds with this indigenous cow; however, the pure breed cows are found almost exclusively in India.
